It is a great career choice which provides many benefits in the short and long term.  Before someone can operate a lift truck they must complete the proper training and obtain certification.

If you wish to become a Certified Forklift Operator there are some key points to keep in mind.

There are many types of lift trucks. Within the Lift Truck Industry, companies will select the Lift Truck(s) which is most suitable for their needs.  There are 4 major types of lift trucks: Counter Balance ( Forklift), Narrow Aisle Reach, Order Picker, and Walkie / Rider Pallet.


Some companies have 1 type while others may have all 4.  If this is a career you are looking to secure, it is advised that you receive training and certification on all of the four lift trucks


Training should include both in-class (theory) and practical driver’s training. It is imperative that you understand all the procedures and safety guidelines before working as a Certified Forklift Operator to prevent accidents at the workplace.  Topics such as: Stability, Pre-Inspections, Safe Driving Techniques (Lifting, Loading, Stacking) and Refueling Procedures for Propane, Battery, Gas, Diesel should be covered.


You must complete evaluations (testing) both in-class (theory) and practically in order to be considered a “competent” certified operator. Upon successful completion you will receive a Training Record and a Certificate of Completion valid for 3 years.


On The Job Training is essential for new forklift drivers. Your place of employment should provide you with additional training to meet their specific procedures.


What to wear to work? Always ensure that you have a pair of approved CSA Safety Shoes. Some companies may ask that you wear a Safety Vest, Hard Hat and/ or Safety Glasses. While working with a forklift, if you are required to charge batteries or change propane tanks, it is advised that you wear the proper Personnel Protective Equipment; such as a Body Shield, Face Shield and Rubber Gloves.


How to chose the right place for Forklift Driver’s Training? Select a Training Centre that is professional, has a proper training facility with their vehicles in appropriate condition and meet all the criteria listed above in regards to Theory and Practical aspects.


By following these guidelines, you are well on your way to becoming a Certified Forklift Operator.
